Art Seen- In Our Own Words: Native Impressions

this exhibitthis A couple weeks ago I went to see the VMFA exhibition In Our Own Words: Native Impressions. This exhibition focuses on the life experiences of native americans in the the united states today, primarily north dakota. Most of the work featured in this exhibition are prints highlighting provocative social and political issues dealt with by the native americans. I really loved pieces like the one to the right (Heyman and Ganje) that depicted figures. The figures were very raw and expressively illustrated, and really contributed to the theme and the tone of the overall series. I also really enjoyed the creative incorporation of text into the pieces, without it looking at all cheesy or kitchy. Overall I really enjoyed exhibition and not only learned about artwork but very relevant social current events.
