I really like how this piece turned out. The composition of the body is much more interesting than what I have done in the past focusing solely on the face. I used colored pencils with a scheme to compliment the board i was drawing on, and i kind of like the effect it makes. However I still want to push how i am composing and drawing to completely resolve the portrait and make it something with meaning. Thats my objective of the future as Im moving on. Fingers crossed I can figure it out!

Still working on how to display figures and what I want to say with them. I hope to increase the creativity of the display, with composition and body language of the people I am drawing. Overall I think this piece is fine, but its just very safe and I could definitely do better. I worked with color pencils and I'm unsure whether or not to keep up with that at the moment.

Crawfurd Adamson is an oil painter who depicts very abstracted and contorted figures, while still managing to keep very realistic proportions. This is so amazing to me, considering just how interesting this makes these paintings. The reason I want to take this artists work into account when making my own is because of the creative body language and compositions, as well as the use of expressive color and mark to resolve the image and add to the tone.

this exhibitthis A couple weeks ago I went to see the VMFA exhibition In Our Own Words: Native Impressions. This exhibition focuses on the life experiences of native americans in the the united states today, primarily north dakota. Most of the work featured in this exhibition are prints highlighting provocative social and political issues dealt with by the native americans. I really loved pieces like the one to the right (Heyman and Ganje) that depicted figures. The figures were very raw and expressively illustrated, and really contributed to the theme and the tone of the overall series. I also really enjoyed the creative incorporation of text into the pieces, without it looking at all cheesy or kitchy. Overall I really enjoyed exhibition and not only learned about artwork but very relevant social current events.

Awareness: Alex Garant

Alex Garant is a portrait artist with a very unique way of rendering her subjects. She primarily works in oil paint, and creates an interesting mix between realism and surreal distortion. Garant has a very strong skill in depicting figure accurately, yet does not stop there. By painting multiple of the same image layered off kilter on top of each other, Garant creates the illusion of "seeing double" in a very kaleidoscope kind of way. What i love so much about these is that they still seem so crisp and the image is not in any way muddled by the multitude of contrasting layers. I also really want to take into my own art is how Garant finishes the piece with its relation to the negative space and the background.
