This painting by André Derain is a portrait of Henri Matisse, 1905. As soon as i saw this I completely fell in love with it, as it accurately shows the kind of color use I am currently exploring in portrait work. This painting was created with direct applications of color, clocked out to utilize optical blending to depict an incredibly detailed portrait. The way this painting uses color to show how light was hitting his face is so awesome to me. The use of color also gives a typical face portrait so much more depth and something much more to look at. This sort of work really intrigues me and I hope to continue to look into this sort of color use.
